Ubuntu > Windows (terms and conditions apply)
So it’s obvious that Pakistan doesn’t really need free or open source software as we get expensive software for free anyway. So why Ubuntu? I’ll go ahead and summarize it in a paragraph. Observe how Ubuntu completely kills all the problems we have with Windows.
Ubuntu is:
- Fast: Boots up in less than 45 seconds.
- Worry-free: No need to worry about anti-viruses or security software. Viruses don’t exist in the Ubuntu world.
- Best Software Pre-Installed: Ubuntu comes installed with EVERYTHING an average user would need; an instant messanger that works across all networks (Pidgin), the best internet browser (Firefox), word processor (OpenOffice), media player (VLC Media Player), e-mail client (Evolution/Thunderbird) and image processing software (GIMP).
- Compatible: Ubuntu is compatible with your hardware. No worries.
- Try before you install: If you order Ubuntu via a free CD from ShipIT , you can use it’s “Live CD” feature to check the OS out without installing it to see if it works properly for you.
- Dual-Boot: You don’t have to get rid of Windows to use Ubuntu! On startup, you will be asked which OS to use.
- Easy-Maintaining: Software updates every six months. No need to worry about constant updating ala Windows.
- Beautiful: It’s sooooo beautiful. Gahhhshh. I’d marry it. Ubuntu does all of it’s visual effects without hitches on a five year old laptop.
Have a look at this demonstrationary video.
Use it. Love it.
I’m currently using Ubuntu’s latest release (Jaunty Jackalope 9.04) for all my computing needs. There have been a few hitches here and there, but then again, the number of hitches seem negligible when compared to the problems I’ve faced in Windows. Ubuntu doesn’t crash. It detects all my hardware. It does not get stuck randomly. The community is very friendly (you can expect your queries to be answered within hours from Ubuntu Forums.) and simply put: everything is so easy and worry-free!
And the most crucial step: installation. Ubuntu is probably the only OS your amma can install.
If you have slow internet, you can even order the Ubuntu CD for free! It takes 4-6 weeks but get rids of the downloading part which will prove to be a bit too hard for the average joe.
By now, I’ve either killed your interest or piqued it. So have a look at some of these other resources. Maybe they’ll convince you
And yes, I recommend everyone – including your grandma – to use Ubuntu. It’s THAT easy.
